Sociopathic lunacy

CORRUPT

Say that your thoughts are so impure
and that your actions brutely injure,
Say that your words speak dishonesty
and that your wishes bode antipathy;

Say that you've murdered men in their beds
and you've stolen gold teeth from their heads,
Say that you've killed their children too
and their wives, dogs and made them fine stew;

Say that you've fed that stew to the poor
and gorged your libido on blood and gore,
Say that you defiled a convent of nun
and you relished the horror as good clean fun;

Say that you painted a poem with their blood
and dragged human carcasses through slimy mud;
Would poets applaud the depth of your word
or would they revile at the evil they heard?

What evil lurks in the minds of men?

The Dark Side

absence of reason

Hubpages poetry forum

I must say that I had no thought of evil and corruption until I arrived at a forum pondering the issue of poetic influence and impact upon the reader. Can a poem correct or redirect a corrupted mind? The simplistic answers are yes and no.

One Hubber realistically spoke of willingness to change by the reader as being essential. We all choose the articles which we read. This is true when we elect the random choices of the search engine and browse through the results.

We clik our choice when we are curious or attracted to a title or subject. Other times, advertisements are thrust upon us and links or feeds direct our attention. The evolution of marketing phsychology and strategy has advanced by lightyears since the advent of the internet. Surveys, cookies, email-scans for subject and "God knows what else" have collected and created a massive data base of the collective consciousness of mankind.

Returning to willingness, I think of the old adage, "You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". You can advertise any product, idea, political platform or religious orthodoxy, but you cannot fully control the action of buying, joining or believing. No excessive inundation of promotion can fully saturate the human mind to compel a purchase, a vote or a conversion. But the psychology of marketing is coming frighteningly close to this objective. The gaming industry, for instance, targets the compulsive personality among potential consumers and promotes self-harming behavior.

"The pen is mightier than the sword" in these times, more than ever. The sword still controls the masses and secures political and financial power and authority. Fear of violence and loss compels the majority to submit. However, it is the pen which drafts the laws by which we are ruled and governed. Pens and swords are both tools and weapons which have shaped the greatest human invention which we call civilization.

So true my friend. yes, how else do the extremists of all societies get to be that way? It starts by the word, written for most and pounded daily into them. Loved the poem. Well spoken of an evil time refuted to be bull by many.

For many this poem will be shocking and or horrific, however you are so right, the pen is mightier than the sword. This has proven itself time and time again throughout history and into the present. Poetry can convey messages to the reader and bend and shape the thoughts in a positive or negative way.

Many a criminal action has taken shape from what a reader has taken from the written word, media, video,t.v. and books. Hollywood has contributed to the brutality in the world and shaped the unbalanced fragile minds of sick people to perform acts of violence.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with this hub. Peace

You are so right in your assessment of the media being close to having the power to "control our buying decisions". To me, this is a dangerous power for anyone to have. You mentioned some of the tricks used to manipulate but there are so very many more. Since many are so subtle we don't counsciously notice them, such as airbrushings in pictures of smoke and condensation, they are all the more dangerous. Thank you for a great Hub on a really interesting topic. The poem, by the way, rocked!

Hi, Loved the poem, as poetvix said, it rocked! in fact the first person to come to mind was an idiot that wrote an insulting comment on my hub today, hidden behind anonymity! but you are so right, so many things bombard our minds these days, that is why the world has changed so much, for the worse, cheers nell

Hello Vix. Thanks for calling over. I am so delighted that you appreciated my poem enough to say it "rocked". That is high praise indeed! I am a neophite to the subject of marketing and subliminal messaging. We have been stripped down to our bare necessities, probed and prodded like lab rats and don't even know the half of it. Cheers.

Sligobay,

Eventhough your poem is dark, it reflects truth. Brutality is rampant in the minds of many, most don,t act on the thought, but a few do. I always enjoy your poems. Thank you for sharing.

Cheers

I am overwhelmed with the positive response to this poem which, as I said, was inspired by a forum discussion. I am following all of you as best as I can and find inspiration in all of your poetry and articles. Though I have been with Hubpages for two years, I feel that I have only just joined a few weeks ago when I started following more poetic Hubbers.

SaddleRider, I was so moved by your poem today where I left a comment. I am honored that such a man of compassion would grace these pages. Thank you for your honest review and perspective.

Nell, your Limerick Hub was a bawdy nostalgic romp back to my youthful days of rugby. Sorry about the masher at your Hub but thank you for confirming Vixen's assessment that the poem rocks. Wow, that's high praise.

AE: Brutality is the best descriptive word for this hub.

The truth of the epidemic of brutality in modern society is sad but I think that its been present all along and was swept under the carpet by the powers that be. Thank you for your kind words. Cheers to all.

It is so sad that there are many out there in this old world that do have that mentality. Some can help it, some cannot! For you to be able to put it to print is fantastic! I doubt that I could! thanks for sharing!!

Thanks for your visit and astute observations. It was a difficult poem to write but I used the play, Sweeney Todd,to disassociate from the violence I was writing about. This Broadway Play had a serial killer as its lead character. Cheers.

Just passing by, for now. Thanks for adding me. A cursory glance of your work leaves me wanting more time to read it!

Well, I'm off to do more work--to have that time.

Wow... this is a great reflection on "Truth." Truth is power. However horrifying a bit, I get the point. I feel the connection and I'm loving it. Your words and the way you express through words... Very beautiful. Very, Very, awesome! I loved it! Thank you.

R.O.L.- Thank you for your visit and kind words. Truth, as you say, is power, but so to is 'deception' power. The truth will set us free and the deception will enslave us. I vote for truth. Awesome is high praise and I am truly humbled. Cheers and come again.

Colin, you must really enjoy my dark side to take the time from your prolific poetry posts to visit a second time. I am flattered. Thank you.

Marvelous poem, you captured just about every aspect of devilment possible in such a way to make easy reading yet give an incite into the mind of not just the reader but also the writer. Indeed, excellent piece there, I rather enjoyed the intellect behind that pen. :D I danced and danced as thoughts of how correct your assessment of the power welded by the hand that holds that pen. When the poet's ink is spread, one know naught the direction it may sway the minds with it's directives. :D hugs :D

Thanks so much Sa'ge. No poet can compel action by another and yet, each phrase and word can provoke thought. The poet can only shine the light in the direction of thought but the reader must find the enlightenment offered. Cheers.

Gerry...I love coming back to your Hubs and discovering those that I have missed...Like finding a hidden bottle of 25 year old Glenfiddich amongst your shining prose...

This is different, and brutally honest...the manic images thrown on this page reflect man's inhumanity to man...Yes, Evil does exist, otherwise how would we know good when we saw it..? The Yin and Yang of life is forever with us, and each must reconcile their impact on others, either positive or negative...

We live in a world where the horrors you describe occur daily, in every part of this spinning planet...However, far outnumbering these man-made horrors are the countless acts of kindness, mercy, and love that also abound around the world...As a species we are still evolving, and that evolution appears to be on the side of the " good "...

Thank you for this thought-provoking prose, writ with your usual passion and honesty...Larry

Hello Larry. It's nice to see you in "my little shop of horrors". I get my inspiration in the strangest places - a poetry forum, of all places. I have faith that good will prevail over evil at the end of the day. In the meantime, evil and corrupt acts will serve to frame and highlight the goodness of mankind. Our primitive animalistic selves will be replicated in our progeny until we choose to elect nurture as a means of converting the nature of the beast.

Gerry - I just saw this hub of yours. I wrote what I could for a Halloween contest and tried to be frightening, but I'm afraid my most frightening aspects are not in my words - more like in my mirror upon first arising. LOL

But I confess to have a kind of antipathy to horror which, in itself, probably discloses a deeper sense of it than I consciously own to. As a kid, the horror movie at midnight on Halloween was truly frightening. I had to bury my face when it got REALLY horrible. But Edward Scissorshands isn't scary. It's the evil lurking in the hearts of otherwise presentable people which is scary. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" is scary. Evil intent and deception are scary.

I really liked and appreciated your discussion of how and whether - and to what extent - people are influenced by "bad influences" though. It is so. Everyone CHOOSES what to accept and take in, like the horse at the water trough. But that some are more susceptible is also illustrated at that trough. If the animal is primed by terrible thirst, he is going to drink even toxic water. And some people are primed by one thing or another to take in the most toxic of stuff. In fact - it's almost the description of most of the influences surrounding us. Even our most beneficial urges are often opposed and countered. Young mothers are steered away from following their instinctive wisdom for themselves and their children - and the results are a generation of unhealthy, obese and defiant young folks who may be inwardly starving for a firm loving hand to guide them.

Anyway - this was a excellent hub and I'm glad it reappeared so I could find it.

sligobay Hub Author 15 months ago

Thank you Nellieanna, for your usual sensitive and perceptive comment. Each of us, our hopes and fears, our achievements and failures and our acts and omissions are the product of both nature and nurture. So many will never know what they've missed, lacked or lost until they've thoroughly examined themselves in the light of the experience of others. So many others will never know what they possess, have gained or may achieve until they learn to view themselves through the eyes of self-love rather than self-hate and the judgement of others.

The youngest generation are the victims of progress. The global economy and technology have eroded parochial familiarity with cosmopolitan rootlessness and displacement. This generation is overwhelmed in every way and in every place. From Indonesia to Kazakhstan and from Chile to Lapland, society and culture are the sacrificial lambs of unconstrained wealth, greed and consumption. The children suffer most.

Thanks DTJ for your visit and your appreciation. I am glad that you grabbed a glimpse into one of my more inspired pieces. If you'll look at my copyright under the poem, you'll see that I read my name employed as part of the interesting imagery of your own recent dark-natured poem about a neighbor wearing a certain hat. I thought that the poem was brilliant but the ego is a funny little thing that has a will of its own. I believe that you addressed the subject of ego in at least one of your poems. Thanks again for your kind words.

Aka Professor M 14 months ago

Perhaps the truly corrupt are those who seek to profit from the depth of evil which is used to shock us by the immensely graphic depiction of these deeds, Sligobay!

The atrocities of every war remain unknown until the fight in the participants is finally sated. Only then do the horrors of the innocent finally see the light of day!

The depravity of and sickness within those imaginations of these people, whose madness comes to light is truly abhorrent to the sensibilities of most decent folk!

So if we are to use the third Newtonian law as a frame of reference, my friend t'would appear that for every action of either type good or evil, there is an equal and opposite reaction to that good or evil!

Sometime to ponder, Wouldn't you say? I bring this up because if there is so much Evil as we've seen then the opposite needs to catch up soon! Regards Aka Professor M!

Thank you Professor M for your visit and the wisdom of your words. Good will eventually overtake evil for persons of faith.

The trouble is that too often, too many people try to think for God. Each believe that they can then preach their message for the Creator. Just because you can preach doesn't give you exclusivity nor the ability to interpret the Masterplan.

It is my reasoning that there is still much to be learned by keeping an open mind & communicating with all people.

People need to stop blaming God for all their troubles & accept that they may be responsible for a lot more of the ills in this world.

One of my favorite inspirational pieces is "Desiderata" by Max Ehrmann! Another poem of immense insight is "If"

by Rudyard kipling! Much Wisdom can be found in those two works.

Colin, Aka Epigramman, is someone who seems to have the ability to see beyond the superficial and find the reality buried deep within the facade that people throw up to hide the truth! He recommended you and I see his reasoning more clearly now! Peace Sligobay! A Cara! ;D

Hey Sligo-good poem and the message clear.

our times are severely violent. in my opinion, the serious writer has a certain responsibility to pen 'remedy' for our sickened society- the pen can wound deeply or it can heal deep wounds.

your use of metaphor is well done.
