Tastes of Rose Wine and Song of the Rose
69
Rosé wine refers to pink wine. Known as rosado in Spain, rosato in Italy or "blush" elsewhere around the globe, the Rosé wine is decidedly pink. Its shade ranges from a subtle hue to a hot pink. The depth of the color depends on the red grape varietal used. These include Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Sauvignon, and Merlot. Zinfandel, Grenache, Malbec, Tempranillo and Sangiovese are others. The length of time that the skins of the grape were left in contact with the fruit pulp and juice effects the color variations. Sweet rosés, off-dry rosés and bone dry rosés are styled to satisfy every palate.
Varietal grapes can be used solo or blended. The choice of grape is often associated with geography and availability. Spanish rosado usesTempranillo and Garnacha grapes.Italian rosato will likely be made from Sangiovese grapes. American rosés favor Merlot and Zinfandel grapes. Rosé wine flavor tends toward subtle variation from the full bodied varietal wine. Rosés offer fruity expectation.
Rosés are seasonally associated with spring and summer picnics and barbecues. Serve them chilled to keep the palate refreshed. Lighter bodied with a more delicate palate, they can accompany almost any food menu. These pink wines are not the sugary sweet wines of old. Wine lovers detest the flood of cheap "wine-coolers" which have sullied the beverage market. Rosé producers are delighted that the pendulum has begun to swing away from this consumer trend and in favor of Rosé.
Song of the Rose
roses
and their fragrance
besiege our senses
sight smell touch
but not
taste and sound;
perfect petals
defended by thorns
feel like silk
between our fingertips
against our flesh;
their fragrance arouse
our olfactory nerve
our sixth sense
sexual arousal
engaged
as we lick and suck
erotic flower
parched tongue longs
to taste the nectar;
so sweet
to the honey bee
petals part to
receive
probing probiscus
straining tongue
and six-footed
pollen prints;
poised to imbibe
life’s nectar
satiating
unquenchable thirst
drinking
stone jars of
divine wine
consumed at
Canaan wedding feast;
silent rose
quiet beauty
summons the heart
yet does not beckon
calling mutely
cacophony of
fragrance;
sensual song
of the rose
in harmony
perfect pitch
in full chorus
serenades
every
heart.

Days of Wine and Roses
This classic film starring Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick is possibly the greatest early depiction of things going terribly wrong with alcohol. Remick was nominated as best actress for an Oscar and should have won the award. The name of this film is totally coincidental with the subject of this Hub article but I thought that I should include the "greenhouse" clip for those who may be having trouble with alcohol. Lemmon has been detoxed and introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous. Remick plays his wife and is still drinking. Lemmon's character cannot resist his obsession and compulsion for alcohol and relapses. He has hidden a bottle in the greenhouse just in case he needed another drink. He did need one, but was too drunk to remember where he had hidden the bottle.

Gerry, this is a wonderful hub that has made me pause and reflect on many things. Thank you. I especially like the words "sensual song of the rose in harmony" in your poem. Very nice. I often put rose petals in my bath water, or in the basin with lavender for a facial steam bath. Roses are so beautiful for many reasons.
Lemmon and Remick were both so good in Days of Wine and Roses. I have seen the movie several times and cry each time. It is a bittersweet story.

Courage to Love, Courage to Risk
Do you think maybe having the courage to love will give one courage to live? Live to love and love to live.
Many blessings and hugs to you, Gerry.
Self-forgiveness is the first step in loving oneself, true. Live to love another may bring false expectations, I agree, and expectations can bring disappointment. Maybe I should change that phrase to if love for self is there, there is hope to love another and to be loved. Is that more of a reality? It makes sense, I think. Love does not always come with expectations. Yes, with God, all things are possible. I have always believed that.
Fear not -- once we overcome the ego the fear fades. Just rise above it and the mists will clear for you. Perpetual loneliness is no place for one who is willing to risk. Besides their is no risk to just reach out. Too often people miss something beautiful because they do not reach out.
I am with Phillis, it is all about self forgiveness. Loved your poem.
Thanks for the Education on Rose Wines as well as your Lovely Poem Sligobay, a real "Treat" to read and Enjoy, so Romantic!

While I can't claim to knowing a thing about wine, I do love roses. I think all of us females do. The poem was as lovely as the roses you show. And, I have to add, I'm mighty jealous of that orange tipped rose. It's gorgeous!
