Brother's Keeper
69Pope Benedict XVI Confesses Catholic Child Abuse
As the winter solstice coincided with a lunar eclipse, the three magi aligned in the Heavens and Pope Benedict XVI openly confessed Catholic clerical child sexual abuse to his Cardinals and Bishops. He did not ask for forgiveness nor disclose any sin (crime) that had not already been irrefutably established before secular authorities in Ireland, Germany, the U.S.A. and elsewhere.
As the earthly successor of the Apostle Simon Peter the Rock, the cornerstone of the foundation of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict should have led by example but failed. Centuries of concealment of endemic sin (crime), warranted an acceptance of responsibility as a bare minimum if there is to be any reconciliation.
Addressing the Curia, Pope Benedict claimed humiliation of the Catholic Church relative to child sexual abuse reports this year. Actively concealing criminal acts by church officials is also a crime but this was not specifically addressed. Pope Benedict urged reflection upon the role of the Church in allowing children to be victimized by priests.
Pope Benedict XVI deflected responsibility upon moral laxity of society, and said:
"We are well aware of the particular gravity of this sin committed by priests and of our corresponding responsibility. But neither can we remain silent regarding the context of these times in which these events have come to light. There is a market in child pornography that seems in some way to be considered more and more normal by society. The psychological destruction of children, in which human persons are reduced to articles of merchandise, is a terrifying sign of the times."
Pope Benedict cast blame on society and its indulgence in pornography and sex tourism. He claimed that sexual permissiveness of the 1970's influenced the predatory priests.
Though the inclusion of the subject of child sexual assault in the annual address to Cardinals and Bishops is important, there was no stated intention to disclose information that is not already publicly known.
It has become common knowledge through the secular sources that child abuse is endemic in the Roman Catholic Church and has become institutionalized. Because the light of the media has been focused upon the most egregious child sexual assaults, the physical child abuse by Catholic nuns and priests remains in the shadows.
Physical Child Abuse and Corporal Punishment
Education, through its curtailment of corporal punishment, has made great progress in a generation. Society has evolved, as well. Media attention to extreme cases of child abuse historically have advanced the cause of child protection. The publicity has been the impetus for the recognition of the problem by governments and justice systems globally.
The full extent of the horror of the past will never be known. Too many victims have silently carried their suffering to their graves with them.
Today, there is an awareness of past abuses and our legal systems have been adjusted. As we progress as a global civilization in the twenty-first century, corporal punishment of defenseless children must be confronted and outlawed around the world. The trauma suffered by child victims lasts a lifetime.

Corporal Punishment in Schools is currently in hot debate. This article will detail the reason of its use and why corporal punishment in schools is being heavily scrutinized. - An Argument Against Corporal Punishment

Brothers' Keeper
Don’t tarry along the pipeline
As the morning bell is rung,
With a brother who is younger
As the final clang is clung;
ooOOoo
Dash across the street without care
Ignore the boy’s cry to stop,
Rush to catch the moving line
Score the point in ‘dodge the cop’;
ooOOoo
Pay no mind to the patrol boy
Though he wears the safety stole,
“It’s better safe than sorry”
Cried the star of the school patrol;
ooOOoo
“Be on time!” their mother chided
“Don’t dally!” her stern command,
“Mind your brother!” she had guided
“When you cross the street, hold his hand!”
ooOOoo
Childish stroll across the meadow
Flouting lockstep march to school,
Court the lure of youthful leisure
March in cadence is the rule;
ooOOoo
Where in Hades was St. Patrick?
Who’d guided them to school each day,
Older brother left them lingering
Idle innocence fell away;
ooOOoo
A choice in haste is never sound
To toe the line or bend the rule,
Go the distance to the crosswalk
Or dart the distance like a fool;
ooOOoo
Whether he led or just followed
Is a fact beyond recall,
Charged to mind this younger brother
Or bear the brunt of fumbled ball;
ooOOoo
Safely ‘cross this minor roadway
Both dashed to join their queues,
Queasy boy with guilt uneasy
Class door broached with fierce bad news;
ooOOoo
Meek younger quaked in custody
Trembling finger found its place,
Childish gasps escaped in chorus
Blame and shame espied disgrace;
ooOOoo
Bandoliered with tin badge shining
Highlighting wrong with reddened shame,
Stood the star of the school patrol
Fearless witness to lay the blame;
ooOOoo
Arrested by the rising star
Whose brilliance dulled the gloom,
Terror gripped two fearful souls
Approaching their impending doom;
ooOOoo
Released due to his tender years
Back to first class, he took flight,
Bad example led him astray
Evil would be taught wrong from right;
ooOOoo
Sister Lucy loomed, board in hand
Terrified child bid to bend,
Rage displayed, bestial nostrils flared
Innocence slain at childhood’s end;
ooOOoo
Hardwood was felled against the child
Childhood pleasures were strewn behind,
Pain stooped fragile body with age
Crushed a body and set a mind;
ooOOoo
Tears welled deep in childless pupils
Wimpers withheld, willed away,
Fear recoiled through seething anger
Defiance donned its brave display;
ooOOoo
Both heart and habit dyed in black
Lucy’s four vows lost their sheen,
She laid a second to his back
“Bad boy! Confess! Renounce your sin!”

Well i guess i'm the first to read and comment.I watched the videos and felt the horror for the children at the hands of the pedophile priests.Your poetry,'Brothers'Keeper'is so very beautiful,yet heartbreaking.I always pictured, in my mind, how sweet the nuns were,how they sacrificed to serve God.I see how cruel some can be.I believe the Catholic church should be brought before the courts,paying money to the victims is not enough.Thank you so very much for writing this poignant story.God Bless you
Cheers
Have a wonderful new year!!
This moving poetry is as beautiful as your heart of compassionate outrage. It is like looking in a mirror. All I can say, through tears, is thank God for you and those that see the damage done to the purest of humans in the name of religion.
sligobay, you had an awful, horrible experience! OMG, how can we ever forgive them? It is in cases like this I query the Christian principle of ‘forgive like God has forgiven us’.
The Pope opened your wounds again. So now it’s bleeding all over again. (Will it ever stop being so sensitive? You said it yourself: “The trauma suffered by child victims lasts a lifetime.” And I agree with you. One does not always feel the pain, but when one has to run fast, or jump high, or bend, the pain shoots up and become unbearable. “Crushed a body and set a mind” – is exactly what they did! And still do!?
All the Pope needed, was one sentence in his speech. “May God have mercy on our souls and give us the wisdom and strength to do His will.”
I wish you lots of love and lots and lots and lOtS of peace, my friend, for this season and the entire 2011 and thereafter.
...your hubs are masterstrokes of art and poetic perfection and that is the reason I am so glad to see you back here ......and of course you are my friend - a true appreciation of the Christmas spirit all year round!
Hi, I watched in horror when I saw this on TV, it always reminds me of that film set in Ireland, The magdalene sisters, I think it was called. Horrible. I am so sorry that you had to experience this, and your poem was spot on. I also wanted to add that I love your photographs, they are fantastic. I hope that one day the Catholic church will wake up and realise that they are there for a reason, and not to hurt young children, all the best for Christmas, and hugs to you across the pond! nell
Poem Titled:Unspeakable Acts.
Unspeakable acts have taken place
In the churches of so called grace
The clergy hide under their steeples
And deny these affronts to the people
Their victims are left in a shattered state
And for justice long have to wait
A case in fact I'll relate to all of you here
About a girl so innocent and dear
She had the displeasure of a priest fondling her
In the vestry where God's eyes were turned away from her
On a short sojourn back to our town
She refused to enter the church grounds
Memories of this event are etched in her head
And her memories will never be properly put to bed
Gerry...You have no idea how much this affected me and brought back long-buried and best forgotten memories...
I served Mass for several outstanding priests, men that were the very embodiment of what a priest should be...men that encouraged me during my youth to seek higher education when I left their orphanages...They backed up their advise with money and scholarship opportunities...I cling to these memories and refuse to allow the despicable and unconscionable actions of one of their cloth take that away from them...
This priest, Father Tuttle, at St Vincent de Paul in San Rafael, California, ( yes, I'll name the SOB ) looked like a miniature Santa Claus...no wonder he gained the trust of so many of us..He violated that trust in the most degrading ways possible...You do not need the details, suffice that he was " creative " in his mentoring and " therapy "...He died in 1969, shortly before I returned to the orphanage to personally thank Frs. Rogan, Baccagaluppi, and Crahal for their letters and support I received while in Vietnam...I, and dozens of other former altar boys that served this monster hope he is roasting in hell...
Gerry, you have writ one of the most heart-rending, honest, and defining poems on childhood tragedy I have ever read...Your gift is such a blessing for all of us here in HubPages and I consider myself fortunate to count you as a friend, whose Irish soul is unbounded with poetic expression...
Merry Christmas, my friend, and may the New Year be one of discovery and love for you...Larry
This is such a great hub. I agree to forgive others and ourselves and it is easier said than done. I like the saying, that until you walk in another man's shoes, don't judge them! I also like the saying that I thought I had it all until I met a man with no "feet." He was injured in a war (landlines). Yes off topic sorry. I am grateful for your hub and learning this.
Beautiful write sligobay! We are our brother's keeper and our children are our treasures. God bless you!
sligobay: This was an excellent and poignant hub. I have known people who confessed to me that nuns routinely spanked them because the former did not like them! A co-worker of mine, a good student, told me that a nun routinely singled her out for corporal punishment because the nun just did not like her. Yes, corporal punishment was routine in Catholic elementary schools in the 1960s. Glad you brought this to light!
